How many of us wish we could speak another language? How many of us regret not paying more attention in language classes at school? Me for one. It’s the sort of thing I think about when I prepare to go on holiday, and then again when I’m actually on holiday.
<3 Feeling free and independent
I’m kind of shy, so when I need to ask someone for directions abroad I retreat even further into my shell. When I see those who have learnt a foreign language talking to locals like it’s the most natural thing in the world, I imagine how simpler it must make their stay. Imagine experiencing a holiday with no boundaries and fewer inhibitions.
<3 Impressing the locals
Even if you’re not keen on learning a new language, using what you already know – even if that’s just ‘yes’, ‘no’, ‘please’, ‘thank you’ or scraping together the few bits you remember from GCSE – is polite and usually appreciated. I’m sure they’d be delighted if you could hold a conversation with them – and it’ll give you a lot of satisfaction too! <3 Meeting new people
If you know the language, you can get chatting to anyone. And when you chat with people you learn so much more – especially the things that most other tourists might not notice. It’s like getting the inside track on your holiday.
<3 Seeing the kids learn something new
Kid are like little sponges, and when you introduce them to a foreign language – at whatever age – you’ll be amazed how quickly they pick things up. Try them with a few key words first, and encourage them to use them where possible. They’ll love getting involved and really feeling part of the holiday.
<3 Keeping your mind active
The benefits aren’t just limited to enjoying a better holiday – learning a new language is a skill, and one that exercises the mind. It makes you curious and supports a healthy attitude to discover more.
