Bubbling cheese, kirsch and a touch of garlic – what’s not to love about a traditional Swiss fondue? Oh, ok, apart from the calories? Moderation is everything, though, and once a year – let’s say on National Cheese Fondue Day, for example (hint, that’s today) – it’s worth celebrating the gooey, oozey, comforting bowl of carbs that is a good Swiss fondue. So, if you’re heading to any of our Swiss parcs this season, seek out a sociable, bubbling pot of goodness in our favourite fondue joints close to your place…Don’t worry, you can work it all off tomorrow.
Kurparkstrasse 11, Leukerbad 3954
Lots of fondue varieties on offer at this friendly, typically Swiss-style family restaurant bedecked in bright spring blooms. Or try rosti – crispy hash browns served with cheese sauce, if you can’t get enough cheese in your life.
3954 Leukerbad, Leukerbad
Its pine-clad interior, bubbling ceramic pots of cheese (so many varieties you really won’t know where to start) and homely, gingham cloths make Sternen feel like you’re whizzed back to sometime in the early 70s. And that’s ok with us – especially when the fondue’s this good. Nice charcuterie boards too.
Add what you like to your cheesy broth – mushrooms, onions, garlic – and dive in to the Oberland’s creamily satisfying stew (you can pay a little extra to have it ‘extra creamy’ too!). The fondue here is one of the best in town – and you’re going to have to make a reservation, or be prepared to queue, it’s that good!
If you’re not the sharing type – although, if that’s the case, why are you ordering fondue anyway? – the Walliserkanne’s dainty one-pot fondues are for you. At least that way, everyone in your party can try different flavours. So, on balance, maybe that’s a win-win after all.
Obere Bönigstrasse 18,
Calvados fondue, anybody? Don’t knock it til you’ve tried it. Or how about a meaty morel fondue? Or bacon? Or Swiss Cognac? The delightful Laterne – in a beautiful old mountainside chalet, likes to mix it up – but also knows how to keep things traditional too. For the fondue purists.
Hotel Chalet du Lac
3807 Iseltwald am Brienzersee
Famous for its fish fondue, the delightfully situated Chalet du Lac takes its lakeside setting very seriously. Its fishy fondue features whitefish, salmon trout and shrimp, with homemade sauces such as mayonnaise, aioli and even a piquant curry sauce. Because there’s more to life than cheese. Apparently.
Grand Café Restaurant Schuh
Höheweg 56, 3800 Interlaken
Chocolate is the name of the game at the supremely indulgent Grand Café Restaurant Schuh. You can see their expert chocolatiers at work, and even have a go yourself on a masterclass. Or, if you simply can’t wait, just pull up a chair at the tasting bar and dive into a seriously divine chocolate fondue.
