Street food is having a moment in Barcelona. So much so that the city even has its own street food festival. Born Street Food sees Barcelona’s most exciting young chefs ply their wares on the Bla de Palau, from 17-19 June. El Born is one of the city’s most exciting places for a gastronomic wander. It’s tucked between Via Laietana and Barceloneta – metro stops Barceloneta and Jaume 1. Stroll down Passeig de Born to sample some seriously great, cheap eats.
Another great place to head is the street food section of the Encants Market. Here, premises serve their own cuisine specialties on the top floor. You’ll enjoy great views of the city too. Expect everything from Spanish (Ibérico ham with figs) to Oriental (roast duck gyoza) at this buzzy little flea market – now housed in a glittery new market hall.
But everywhere you go in this city has its fair share of food to fuel you up on the go. After a sunny day splashing in the sea, or strolling around the sights there’s nothing better than exploring the freshest local cuisine.
Try something new. Sit with the locals and even save some money with our guide to the must try street eats in Barcelona. Avoid those the tourist trap restaurants on la Ramblas, with their inflated prices and so-so food. Instead, sample the delights from the hole-in-the-wall vendors, beach shacks and the street carts. You’ll be glad you did.
Beef cheeks stew with collagen – Melt in the mouth well-seasoned meat, cooked until tender with tasty juices/gravy mopped up with crusty bread. Wash down with a glass of red wine. Our favourite little gem is based at a market stall and offers 14 seats around the food prep area. Juan the owner adds to the fun. His filling fare is delightful, and the people watching is second to none! Try: The Pinotxo Bar in Boqueria Market Carrer, la Rambla, 89.
Bocadillos (a Sandwich made with a type of Spanish baguette) – Fresh, tasty and cheap. Jamon, chicken, cheese – and don’t forget your sauce – they’re all yummy! The Patatas Bravas sides are really tasty too if you’re starving. We recommend you grab your food from the hole in the wall and take to the port to eat. There are long queues but it’s work the wait. Try: Bo de B, Carrer de la Fusteria 14.
Churros – Long sweet treats made with choux pastry, deep fried and covered in sugar often served with thick chocolate to dunk into. Originally believed to originate from Spanish shepherds who spent most of their days working in the mountains. Occasionally they needed a sugar-rush pick me up: enter Churros! Sweet, sticky and filling, the perfect treat! Try: Xurreria Trebol Corsega 341.
Paella – A slow cooked rice stew with vegetables, meats or fish (never together!) with a saffron seasoning. Try Paella Parellada at 7 Portes, away from the tourist trap restaurants, which serves one of the most authentic in Barcelona. Full of flavour and perfectly cooked, one portion may be enough for two. Choose from traditional or even some more innovative paellas served with noodles, or even more soup-like rice-based paellas all at reasonable prices. Try: 7 Portes, Passeig d’Isabel II, 14.
Patatas Bravas – Irregular cubes of fried potato with some pimiento powder sprinkled on top for a little kick dipped in plenty of garlicy aioli and washed down with beer (which goes like a partner in crime with the patatas.) Found in most places but try Bar Tomas, Major de Sarria 49 and take cash as they don’t accept cards.
Jamón iberico – from an ancient breed of pig found only on the Iberian Peninsula. Curing for up to four years gives it an intense flavour. Try the ultimate cured ham, something not to be missed when visiting Spain. For a reasonably priced snack bar try Reserva Iberica, where the friendly staff will take time to talk you through the different types of hams. Try the ham taster platter and wash down with a glass of Cava for a taste sensation as well as learning something new! Try: Reserva Iberica, Rambla Catalunya, 61.
Burgers – yes, even Barcelona loves a burger. But, this being Spain, they do them with style – and the beef is flavoursome and rich. The burgers (and the beer) at Chivuo’s are seriously impressive. Try them with pulled pork and potatoes and don’t expect to eat for the rest of the day. A great little Catalan success story, they’ve three outlets in the city. Try: Carrer del Torrent de l’Olla, 175.
